Anthony Joshua has confirmed via various sources that Angel Fernandez will be his new trainer going forward. The two have been working together for some time, with Fernandez working as number 2 under head trainer Rob McCracken but he now takes charges of Joshua’s training. Anthony Joshua travelled the world and touched base with a number of boxing trainers, such as Eddy Reynoso, Virgil Hunter and even Floyd Mayweather but choose to stick with what he knows.
The former two-time heavyweight world champion also confirmed that he may take an interim fight in order to stay active whilst waiting for the Oleksandr Usyk rematch. With the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, it is unclear when Usyk will be available to fight again as he battles freedom for his country. Usyk currently holds the IBF, WBA & WBO world titles and is under contract to rematch Joshua.
Spanish coach Angel Fernandez works with a number of other professional boxers such as: Frazer Clarke, Richard Riakporhe, Isaac Chamberlain and O’Hara Davies. Fernandez is somewhat of a unknown quantity and doesn’t have the big profile as some other trainers but appears to be respected and highly regarded amongst many active boxers. Only time will tell if Joshua’s decision is a good one or not.
