Canelo Alvarez as reported is close to agreeing a mega two fight deal with Eddie Hearn and the DAZN network, that could be worth around $85million, reports ESPN.
ย
The deal involves fights against WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and trilogy bout with IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
ย
It would seem that the DAZN are making a power business move by locking in boxing’s cash cow for the whole year of 2022. DAZN is a subscription based network and Canelo brings big numbers to his fights, big TV audiences as well as everything else that comes with big Canelo fights; sponsorship deals, exposure, big ticket revenue and so on.ย
ย
The fight Is expected to be against Dmitry Bivol on May 7th at light-heavyweight. With the second fight to be against Gennady Golovkin on September 17th at super-middleweight – the second fight is subject to Canelo winning the first again Bivol in May.
ย
The Bivol fight presents the opportunity for Canelo to collect another world title and a second world title at light-heavyweight. And of course, the Golovkin trilogy fight speaks for itself. The first two fights between the two are controversial and who won/lost either fight is hotly contested between fans of both boxers. The third fight offers Canelo the chance to silence his critics with respect to his rivalry with GGG.ย
ย
ย Mexican boxing superstar Canelo is the sport’s most powerful individual and he is subject to no one. Most boxers have to tie themselves down to contracts with promoters and/or broadcasters and in the main, their career path is directed by them and not the boxer. There are of course exceptions to this but that’s the reality for the majority of boxers.
ย
It good to see boxers have such power and autonomy with regard to their careers and i believe fighters should be reward to the most for fight shows but lets not completely bash promoters and television networks as they bring value to fight shows and for boxers – the balance and distribution of fiances just need to be right.ย ย
