The Canelo and Golovkin first clashed in September 2017 and their 12 round battle ended in a controversial draw. Many onlookers and fans felt Golovkin should have been awarded a points victory. The rematch occurred a year later and Golovkin won a majority points decision – this was a very close fight and depending on your perspective, either man could have won or scored as another draw.
Boxing fans have been eagerly waiting for a trilogy bout and Golovkin appears keen on redemption, as rumors circulate that he wants a third bout as soon as possible. But Canelo is more keen on becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion before facing Golovkin any time soon.
Speaking to ESPN Deportes, Canelo said ‘Golovkin obviously you know, that the only fight he wants maybe to retire, is the fight with Canelo’
‘Right now, the most important thing that we have in mind are other objectives, and the first is Callum Smith and as Eddy (Reynoso) says, to unify the titles at 168 and continue making history’
Canelo said later ‘We will see Golovkin later’
