Former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin and former WBC world title challenger Luis Ortiz entertained fans in bout which saw two knockdowns for both men.
Each man hit the canvas in the first round, but Charles Martin’s was ruled out due to a mix up of feet but then Martin was able to drop Luis Ortiz in what appeared to be a flash knockdown, from big overhand left. Both southpaws unloaded big punches when openings arose.
A stiff jab from Martin at the end of the fourth round dropped Ortiz for a second time and the American appeared to be cursing to victory as he dominated the Cuban heavyweight in the early rounds.
But in the first minute of the sixth round, King Kong turned the fight on its head and in his favour after landing a huge overhand left on Martin, which staggered him badly. There was a bizarre moment as Martin’s glove got tied up in the ropes during the knockdown.
The referee gave Martin a count and as the fight resumed, Luis Ortiz pursued his man. The Cuban unloaded a barrage of punches upon Martin as he staggered around the ring. Ortiz was finally able to drop Martin for the second time and whilst Martin was able to rise to his feet, referee Frank Santore Jr decided to wave off the contest
At the end of the fight, Charles Martin was frustrated with the outcome and started yelling at Luis Ortiz, who pushed him in response. But tension quickly cooled and they embraced in a hug and displayed sportsmanship to one another.
When Luis Ortiz was asked who he wants to face next in the heavyweight division, he simply replied ‘anyone’
Who would you like to see Luis Ortiz fight next Whilst Charles Martin was able to display power, his younger years appeared to be an advantage as Ortiz looked aged and old during the early rounds. But Ortiz’s patience and resilience as well as power won the fight
