Ryota Murata is a superstar of boxing in Japan and another superstar of boxing is tempted to shine his star brighter across world boxing by facing Murata in the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan.
Golden Boy, the promotional team behind Canelo, see a fight in Japan as an opportunity to further his image and name within a new region of the world, to increase his status as a global sporting superstar.
Canelo’s promoter, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez, told Sky Sports: “He wants to fight abroad and we have discussed with him fighting in Japan, a homecoming in Mexico, and the UK. He has considered all of those options and, before he retires, he will fight abroad’’
“It’s about his brand. He wants to become a more international star, not just fighting in the US. He wants to become an even bigger star than he is now. He has fans all over the world and he wants to build on that.”
Murata won Olympic gold for Japan in 2012 and is the current WBA middleweight world champion, with 16 wins (13kos) and 2 defeats. Murata is ranked as the world’s sixth best active middleweight by The Ring magazine.
Canelo is also linked with fights with Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith, Chris Eubank Jr, John Ryder, Dmitry Bivol and Demetrius Andrade.
